There are 4 major problems that contribute to Alzheimer's and  Dementia 

 

1) Amyloid Plaque Build up in the Brain:   Amyloid is a general term for protein fragments that the body produces normally. Beta amyloid is a protein fragment snipped from an amyloid precursor protein (APP). In a healthy brain, these protein fragments are broken down and eliminated. Amyloid plaques are hard, insoluble accumulations of beta amyloid proteins that clump together between the nerve cells (neurons) in the brains of Alzheimer’s disease patients.

2) Frayed and damaged Myelin. When the Myelinsheath is damaged, nerves do not conduct electrical impulses normally, thus interrupting normal brain functions

3) Shrinking of the Brain (Depleted levels of BDNF): Alzheimer’s and dementia patients have startling low amounts of BDNF. Evidence suggests the higher your BDNF, the lower your risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia.

4) Mineral Deficiencies:The brain requires a constant supply of micronutrients for energy metabolism of neurons and glial cells, neurotransmitter synthesis and action, as well as nerve impulse, and when there is a lack of nutrients brain function is understandably severly impaired.

How bad are Amyloid Plaques? Studies show that having a high amount of beta amyloid or "plaques" in the brain are associated with Alzheimer’s and Dementia, and can cause a steep decline in mental health and Brain function. High levels of beta Amyloid plaques may be a more important factor in determining which people are at greater risk for cognitive impairment or other memory diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, than people who have the Alzheimer's gene. 

There are studies that suggest poor blood flow as a contributor of increased plaque deposits. It is recommended to keep physically active as an added defense in removing plaques from your brain.

The speed at which signals are transmitted is limited by the distance between nodes, the thickness of the myelin wrapping, and the length of the exposed axon in the node.Damaged Myelin causes serious issues when a person tries to recall a memory or try to form an idea. 

Myelin repair, also known as remyelination, has previously been thought of as close to impossible, but we now know that certain natural substances can support the bodies ability to remyelinate.

The Vital role BDNF plays. Alzheimer’s and dementia patients have starterling low amounts of BDNF. Evidence suggests the higher your BDNF, the lower your risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) plays an important role in neuronal survival and growth, serves as a neurotransmitter modulator, and participates in neuronal plasticity, which is essential for learning and memory. Decreased levels of BDNF are associated with neurodegenerative diseases with neuronal loss, such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis and Huntington's disease. Thus, BDNF may be useful in the prevention and management of several diseases including diabetes mellitus. BDNF is a member of the neurotrophin family of growth factors along with nerve growth factor (NGF); neurotrophins-3 (NT-3), NT4/5 and NT-6. BDNF is synthesized in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) as a 32–35 kDa precursor protein (pro BDNF) that moves through the Golgi apparatus and trans-Golgi network (TGN).
